New Zealand’s employment market has definitely changed over the past 6-8 months, with most of the construction industries job movement coming to a virtual stop as well as sales and marketing positions becoming more scarce and therefore highly competitive, with many more talented and experienced candidates coming onto the market as positions become harder to find. These are just two of the many industries that 1st Call Recruitment have noticed changes, however most industries have experienced a down turn in hiring new staff and many in fact have been downsizing.
However, certain areas of the employment market are still very active and for immigrant’s wanting to move to New Zealand the below opportunities are available amongst others:

As always, your best bet is to see what is required through the NZ skills shortage lists, this is always up to date and makes the process easier when going for a work visa or permanent residency here.
We suggest for those who are seriously looking at moving to New Zealand to make sure they have done an initial investigation into the locations that they are interested in moving to and see what opportunities are available for their area of expertise.
And don’t forget that there are people to help you through this process!
Contact local recruitment agencies in your region of choice who deal in your career line. They will have knowledge of local companies who may be interested in your skills and should be able to gauge what opportunities are available for you ahead of time.
However, just like anything else there are the good and the bad so it’s always best to shop around. Don’t forget these people are representing you and if you don’t think they can help you find work then find another agency that can.
We recommend approaching recruitment agencies that are locally based in the region that you are looking to move to. They will have local knowledge and connections and should be more interested in making sure they find the right ‘fit’ for both you and their clients as they have a vested interest in nurturing long term relationships rather than making a quick fix!
A good recruitment consultant can help make the application process easier for you by explaining to potential employers that taking on someone from overseas is actually quite an easy process usually with great results and not as scary as they sometimes perceive it to be! Sometimes employers just need to be taken through the visa application steps by someone they can trust and often a recruitment agency may be successful at getting you considered for a role where you may have been turned away applying direct.
New Zealand employment agencies as a whole don’t charge candidates looking for placements, so use this to your advantage. At the end of the day agencies get paid for successful placements so if there are any opportunities out there they should do their best to find them!
Using more then one agency can either help or hinder your chances depending on the situation. Some agencies may have an exclusive agreement to supply candidates to a company and be the only ones who can help you get your foot in the door for a particular position. On the other hand they may not have the connections necessary to get your CV in front of other companies. Ask them what they can do for you! They may suggest you give them a couple of weeks before you approach any other recruiters – this means they don’t have to race against other agencies putting your CV out to the same companies and can form a better application on your behalf.
You should get better service by keeping your job search with just one or two hand picked agencies - if they know they are not competing with others they will put more effort into getting to know you and getting results. Give them a chance to work for you before applying directly.
Always make sure that you manage the process by asking your agency who they will be marketing you to. If you are working with more than one agency make sure that you keep them both informed of who the other has approached on your behalf - effectively they could cancel each other out if a company receives your application from more than one agency!
New Zealand is a beautiful country on the whole with open and helpful people, most will assist but be careful as just like anywhere else there are charlatans, don’t be afraid to ask for help but always be aware of what the process is and what they are offering to do for you.
We look forward to welcoming you to New Zealand!
Warm regards
